some advice for this newbee

Postby bethesda08 on Mon Jun 01, 2009 3:05 pm

me and my boys are trying to make a trip to OC or anywhere near or in MD this summer for a short surf trip. we're all beginners, but know nothing about this area. ive surfed a few places, but nowhere in the east coast. Where is the best surf in your opinion? and what is the best time between June 5-August 10. the area would have to have a surf shop for rentals. i live right outside dc by the way
Thanks

First, welcome to the forums! If your going to OCMD for a vacation with your friends....

I guess I would ask, have any of you surfed before? If not, or only a few times, I would suggest getting some lessons the first day. Your instructor could give you some tips about where to go, renting boards, etc. In OCMD you can only surf certain streets on a given day, so you will have to find that out before your trip but there are always several streets open each day. You can most likely rent surfboards and get lessons from kcoast surf shop. If you go in June, you will most likely need a wetsuit, so later in the summer will be better for you if you dont have a wetsuit. As far as when waves are best...it depends, they change everyday based on the swell, storms in the atlantic, etc. We really cant predict more than a few days away and even then its tough.

assateague is divided into 2 parts, MD an VA side. The md side is just outside OCMD (5 min) and VA side is 45 min south of OCMD. I think assateague has better surf and its less crowded, but there is no boardwalk or anything like that. I actually surf the VA side all summer as i live in chincoteague. you could always stay in OCMD and surf all three places. when you are actually making the trip down, i would check out the surf reports. but, my guess is that you can surf assateague at low tide all summer.
